Partner Randall Fox Discusses the Future of the IRS Whistleblower Office under Trump in Law360

Published in: Law360
NEW YORK -- KM Partner Randall Fox was quoted by Law360 on January 28 in an article discussing what to expect for the IRS Whistleblower Office under the Trump Administration.  Since assuming office on January 20, President Trump has begun staffing and budget cuts across government departments. However, there are hopes that the office – which helps to efficiently identify illicit tax activity while rewarding and protecting those that bring it to light – will be seen as aligning with the administration’s goals and remain unscathed.

In addition to ideological alignment, following an added $80 billion in funding given to the IRS as part of the Inflation Reduction Act in August 2022, the office added staff, restructured, and invested in public-private partnerships with attorneys. The changes have led to increased efficiency and settlements for the government.

"You're never going to have perfect knowledge about what's happening in an investigation, but there's been a big change in communication with whistleblowers and their lawyers and the whole tone of how the program is being operated," said Mr. Fox. "And that's very refreshing."
